Business Advisor

(Full-time, Permanent)

Salary: $55,000 to $60,000

Invest WindsorEssex (IWE) is the lead not-for-profit economic development corporation responsible for advancing economic development to grow and sustain prosperity in the Windsor-Essex region.

As a member of the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre (SBEC) at IWE, the Business Advisor is responsible for providing direct support, motivation and assistance to new entrepreneurs in the startup and early growth stage of business development as well as supporting existing businesses. 

In this hands-on role, the Business Advisor is challenged to analyze situations, make recommendations, and educate clients regarding business plans, market feasibility, financial viability, operations management, business structures, and other matters relevant to starting and operating a business. 

In this capacity the Business Advisor will promote the SBEC, participate in community outreach, and ensure the effective promotion and delivery of signature entrepreneurial programs.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide one on one consultations to new and existing business owners and entrepreneurs to provide advice and support on a wide variety of business topics including business plans, marketing plans, rules and regulations, viability, financing, etc.
  • Lead the formal delivery of information sessions related to starting a business and writing a business plan
  • Plan, coordinate and execute business development programs, networking, community presentations and seminars on all aspects of starting and managing a business
  • Promotion and delivery of signature entrepreneurial programs including young entrepreneurs and startups across the region
  • Recruit partners and outcomes for programming and report activities and metrics achieved to management in a timely and responsive manner


  • University degree or college diploma in business, economics or a related field
  • Experience in small business consulting including developing a small business an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Thorough knowledge in business planning preparation, market analysis, financial planning and forecasting, small business needs, business start-up procedures and government and private sector programs and services available to assist small business
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and a spirit of entrepreneurship
  • Client-focused and possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills to conduct client consultations and seminar presentations
  • Highly motivated, creative, and responsive with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, time sensitive environment
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft 365
  • Experience using a customer relationship management (CRM) system and video conferencing tools
  • Knowledge of social media, survey and event management tools an asset

Other Requirements

  • Regional outreach and travel required
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required to deliver programs and attend events
  • Own transportation and a valid Ontario driver’s licence
  • Multilingual/bilingual considered an asset
