The Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) plans to hold a one and a half day spring meeting that will be attended by 75-100 economic development professionals from both the public and private sector.  The program will allow members to learn and share information on current issues and programs that affect the profession.  In addition to the formal program there will be one reception held.

The success of the Spring Meeting depends on the programming, location and venue.  When selecting the spring meeting’s venue, availability of bedrooms at a reasonable room rate, and meeting rooms, accessibility of transportation from airport and train stations will be considered.  All requirements are outlined in this request for proposal (RFP).

EDCO will promote this venue and event with a major announcement at the 2016 Annual Conference and Showcase to be held February 2-4, 2016.

What’s New for Celebrate Ontario 2016?

The Tourism Event Marketing Program is merging with the Celebrate Ontario program to streamline the application process for festivals and events. New and existing events may now apply for marketing funding through the Celebrate Ontario 2016 program. The newly combined program will continue to strengthen Ontario’s tourism offerings through closely aligned and focused programming and marketing support.

Applicants are encouraged to better understand their obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The AODA makes it possible for people of all abilities to be a part of their communities every day. The Government of Ontario has published a Guide to Accessible Festivals & Outdoor Events for organizers of festivals and outdoor events to improve accessibility and to better understand their obligations under the AODA. Expenses related to improved accessibility and services are eligible under the 2016 Celebrate Ontario program. Next year, the Celebrate Ontario 2017 program will consider how applicants have met their obligations under the AODA as part of the scoring criteria.

Applicants are invited to consider Canada’s 150th in their planning. For events occurring between January 1, 2017 and March 31, 2017, organizers might consider an enhancement activity that celebrates or commemorates Canada’s 150th ─ the anniversary of Canada’s Constitution Act, 1867, which established the Confederation of Canada ─ in planning their events.

The deadline to submit your Celebrate Ontario 2016 application is November 4, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) via the Grants Ontario System.

The EDCO Awards Committee has added a new flash of innovation to the award categories this year. We are pleased to announce 2 brand new awards to be presented at the 2016 President’s Awards Banquet on February 4th in Toronto, Ontario.

The first award is the Digital Influencer of the Year. This award reflects the growing importance of social media in business and economic development. Nominations should be made for individuals who have influenced and contributed to the profession of economic development through the use of social media tools such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or other similar tools. These submissions will be judged on their overall contributions and the significance of their impact on their peers, their community and the industry overall.

The Innovative Community Award is sure to break some ground as the second new award, and the first award if it’s kind. This award will be presented to a community who has embraced innovation to significantly impact their community. It may be a specific project or a series of events, or a collaboration of many smaller projects, but in the end the community and its people are better off because of the initiative. These submissions will be made in video format and judged by the members of EDCO. The winning submission will be recognized at the banquet as well as asked to present at the 2017 Conference.

All Ontario communities are encouraged to make submissions for the EDCO Awards of Excellence. Winners will be recognized for their efforts and seen as leaders in the industry. All submissions receive professional feedback from our panel of expert judges. The awards submission website will open September 14, 2015. The EDCO Awards of Excellence has a menu of opportunities for submission in many different disciplines of economic development including marketing, product development, technology and much more.  For more details on the awards and submission process visit the Awards Page.
